Well, earlier tonight Andy, John and myself (all committee members) were invited to view the Mongoose offices as a potential new venue for the SWAT gaming club. We had a good chat with Matt and Nick (a regular SWAT member himself of course) and were generally reassured about a variety of potential issues that could have spoilt our residency down there. And I believe we reassured them about the potential risks of having a crowd of strangers invading their offices once a week.
In short, it looks like a very good, even ideal scenario. We three were all convinced, let's put it like that.
The next stage is to go through a EGM at SWAT, to put it to the general vote about migrating down there. There is also the remote possibility that one of our members else has found an even better venue, I suppose, but I must admit I doubt such a venue exists.
To move matters on quickly, we are looking at holding an Extraordinary General Meeting on Tuesday the 27th of May (yes, I know we should allow three weeks notice, but the currently reduced active membership means we are lighter on our feet, and I reckon a high enough percentage of the currently active electorate can be mobilised to attend in these two weeks) - and IF the motion is passed to migrate to Mongoose, then we can move there on June the 3rd.
So, if anyone has any questions at this point, by all means ask them here.

Is this a good opportunity to ring around the membership list to get an indication of people's future attendance/interest/membership in SWaT, as I think people (I would) may like a heads-up on what club numbers may be in the future.

I think its a moot point at this time, Tom - of our existing members we are fairly sure that some people were unhappy with the current venue, so they might just start attending more often at a new (and rather well appointed, it must be said) venue, where we have such advantages as sensible storage space, the ability to leave half-completed games out, the absence of tobacco smoke etc. etc.
We are having a SWAT EGM in less than two weeks, don't forget, that would be an opportunity to do a straw poll as to who might attend more frequently now.
And certainly, if we get the go-ahead from the members to migrate to Mongoose, then its certainly worth a phone/letter blitz to inform our missing members that we have the new venue. Curiostity might get some of them in, and the facilities might persuade them to be more regular.

I was thinking that a 'phone blitz' could inform them of the EGM and then ask if they have any definite intentions for attendance this year at a new location or any. Cards on the table - in my opinion the numbers for boardgaming has dropped below critical mass and I would like an indication if it is going to temporary or the staus quo.

Tom, I feel your pain. However, my understanding is that there are several new people at Mongoose itself, a collection of staff, friends, playtesters and err... dogs, that are open to new experiences. I know proper boardies at SWAT have been thin on the ground in recent weeks, but don't be too hasty to walk away if thats what you are thinking of. If nothing else, we will keep you informed and you will see the weight of the traffic on this forum in weeks and months to come.
As you know, unless I have arranged a mini's game (which is rare for me) I am usually delighted to play a board game myself, and am happy to promote them and want them to prosper. So, don't wander too far away, old fella!
Having said that, Andy should be sending out EGM notification letters very soon, so Andy please see about including a RSVP indicator to gauge ongoing and future interest in SWAT.
